Pivot Developments is an independent property development company established by seasoned self-building team, Richard Ellam and Laura Ellam.  Founded in 2020, the firm is led by principles of sustainable design, and aims to take a ‘fabric first’ approach to projects by building low impact, high quality living spaces which positively enhance the occupants’ wellbeing.

We are both from engineering and science backgrounds, specifically Aerospace and Geophysics, and have over 40 years’ experience between us working in the Energy Industry in careers that spanned 4 continents. During this time, we also embarked on self-build projects which started from a passion for creating a home for our growing family which gave us the living space and comfort we needed.  We realised very quickly that building from scratch gave us an opportunity to be ‘different’, to incorporate new technologies and materials that enhance a person’s living space and reduce the need for dependency on fossil fuels; ironic seeing as this energy source had been our bread and butter throughout our careers! 

Working within the Energy sector has taught us that being ahead and being forward thinking is key to making positive change and we want to apply this mindset to the residential housing market.  Our aim is to create bespoke homes that think ‘outside the box’ and deliver energy conscientious living spaces in unique environments. We are currently building a new development of 4 houses in Sussex, UK, all designed to be 50% more energy efficient and cheaper to run than the average UK home.
